  • The Cell Tower land lease agreement was signed 10-31-16 and returned to DataPath, who had at least one carrier waiting for that document so they could submit paperwork to lease space on the tower.  DataPath also has received word that the final Tribal Assessment and the EPA final environmental assessment, and the engineering designs are complete. Permit application is anticipated any time now.

The presentation to the Council and residents on April 22 by CityScape.  The Council approved the recommended site that best serves the residents, which is slightly northeast of the Maintenance Garage behind the Public Safety Building.  It will be a 115' monopine with very full branches.  Other sites were dependent on existing towers being enhanced to ensure the signal would carry to all residents.

As you know, cell phone reception is deteriorating rapidly in the Town and we have had numerous complaints from our residents. RFP's for a cell tower in the Town were reviewed and fully vetted by the Finance Committee.  The Committee made a recommendation that was approved by Council at the September 11, 2015 Special Called Council Meeting to select Datapath Communications as the provider to advise on location, manage the tower and secure tenants.  On October 22, the Town Council held a Cell Tower Workshop to receive public input.  Ordinance 524 was approved to amend the Land Development Code to allow a communication tower up to 135' under very specific conditions.

Public input has been encouraged and received on this subject. Please see the list and links below to approved minutes where the topic has been discussed.

An independent research firm, CityScape, was hired to perform a study regarding placement and height that would best serve the Town.

Click here for the CityScape report that was presented at the March 28, 2016 Council meeting.  This photo below shows the search ring results where the computer identified the 110' recommended tower must be placed in order for the entire town to receive cellular and data coverage.  It encompasses a small portion of Town's Public Safety Department and woods, a large portion of Bermuda Bay, and the northernmost part of The Estuary.  The search ring is in the center (slightly right) of the map indicated by a dotted oval.  Bee Gum Point is the area in the upper left, John's Island back gate is the road extending to the right.

CityScape was given direction at the March 28 meeting to analyze the electric substation site on Fred Tuerk Drive and provide comparative statistics to the Town Hall site as soon as possible, which was completed by mid-April as tasked.

This aerial map was made using the Property Appraiser's website to show the approximate footprint and circumferential distances of 200', 500' and 1000' from the potential Fred Tuerk site.  The final site selected is on Town Hall property East of the Maintenance garage and North of the Community Center.  The process involves outside agency approvals.
