Household, Yard Waste and Recycling Information

The Town of Indian River Shores has a franchise agreement with Treasure Coast Refuse, a subsidiary of Republic Services, for removal of household and yard waste, as well as recycling. There is a mandatory collection in accordance with Town ordinance Sec. 54.02, and associated billing.   They may be reached by calling their local office at 772-562-6620 ext 3.

Please click here for the County's database regarding your personal residential dates for pickup of household, recycle and yard waste.  Please find your street name on one of these sheets to see if you are scheduled for Monday & Thursdays or Tuesday & Fridays.  General recycling information is below.
 
Yard waste is picked up on Wednesday with the exception of John's Island, Ocean Pearl, The Estuary and The Shores (these neighborhoods do not subscribe to this service).
  • Brush is to be placed curbside and not mixed with garbage
  • Brush must be bundled and tied or taped, no more than 4' long or over 50 pounds (except palm fronds)
  • Tree limbs must be less than 4" in diameter
  • Yard trash (e.g., leaves) must be placed in reusable containers.  NO PLASTIC BAGS accepted; however, brown yard waste bags purchased from home improvement stores are allowable.
Residents may arrange for Republic Services to pick up their bulk waste such as furniture, mattresses, and unwanted appliances.  It can be taken to their landfill on 1325 74th Ave SW in Vero Beach (off Oslo Road).  Please call 772-794-2322 with landfill questions.  It may also be taken to a County Landfill (click on link for hours and locations).  There is no fee for this service, and they also accept yard waste under 4" diameter.  Anything formerly attached to your home (construction debris), such as cabinets, carpet, toilets, windows, glass, wallboard, etc. may be brought there as well.
 
Hazardous waste (cell phone batteries, oil based paint, items containing mercury, flourescent bulbs and "sharps") may be disposed of during normal operating hours at any of the Convenience Centers (Roseland, Winter Beach, Gifford, Old Dixie at First Place, or Fellsmere). The Convenience Centers link has hours, maps and addresses.
Outdated or unwanted medicines may be taken to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office during normal working hours.

> ALL recycling is picked up on WEDNESDAYS effective November 1, 2015. <
Place these items together in your bins (no sorting necessary):
  • Rinsed out containers, glass bottles or jars with lids removed, bulks rigid plastics, scrap metal, aerosol cans and aluminum foil products, "dry" recyclables, such as newspapers, catalogs, magazines, junk mail, phone books, wrapping paper, paper bags, "clean" pizza boxes, flattened boxes including soda or beer cartons

These are not acceptable to place at the curb for recycle at this time:

  • Organic garbage, plastic bags or plastic wrap, plastic caps, hoses or rubber, ceremics, styrofoam, propane, electronics, paint cans, tires, clothing/textiles, shredded paper.

Please recycle plastic bags and wrappers!  More types of plastic wraps and bags than you ever imagined can be recycled, and here's a list of where to take them and the distance from Indian River ShoresAlmost every Publix, Winn Dixie, and Wal-Mart has containers for you to place clean, dry plastic bags.

Remember to:

  • Have your bin in plain sight by the truck driver before 7 a.m. on your collection day, and remove it from the curb by dusk

Recycling service is provided on Wednesday(effective November 1, 2015) in all neighborhoods based on individual contracts with Republic Services.  Residents of Indian River Shores who are in need of an additional or replacement blue bins may request one at the Town's Public Safety Department on Fred Tuerk Drive.
